Reiko Tsunashima 綱島 礼子 | Frozen Scenery 凍景 | Sumi ink, paper, paper mat, wood panel 墨・紙・紙墊・木板 | Φ30cm | 2008
Reiko Tsunashima’s artworks are abstract representations using Sumi (Japanese ink) on paper. The subjects are apparently natural landscapes, which she calls “Scene of Sumi”. Because the climate at the time of production has a significant impact on the conditions of Sumi, water and paper, the works are also characterized as being “collaboration with nature”. The contingency of the blurring of Sumi in the process of moving the brush is an inevitable process that can be used to express “something” that emanates there. Meanwhile, the cutting and layout of the mats on panels are elaborately calculated, which contributes to an established style of expression that is both simple and original. Her artworks are like windows to the Sumi world, so you can get into there from her artworks. The circular-shaped artworks are part of her popular series that has been created since 2008.
