Eun Nim RO | Untitled | 油畫 | 65.1 x 95.2 公分 | 2004

Eun Nim RO (1946-2022) is one of the most prominent Korean female artists, who has contributed to German art education for more than two decades serving as a professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, Department of Design while being invited to Bauhaus-Archive as a BDI Award Winner; House of the Cultures of the World, Berlin; Documenta IX, Berlin; The Last Art-of-Peace Biennale, Hamburg; And others. She presented works with a wide spectrum of mediums, including oil painting, black and white acrylic paintings on Korean paper, installations, performances, terracotta sculptures, and even stained glass at church.

Particularly influenced by Fluxus artists, in the 1970s and 1980s, her performance—hanging leaves made of paper on real trees and taking plywood puppies for walks—captures the moment of intersecting human-created art with nature. Ro worked on the topic of nature throughout her life as to “what nature is composed of and how its power functions.” Her work is completed by dynamic processes, in which she places large pieces of Korean paper or canvases on the floor, then spontaneously picks up brushes, paints, throws, or presses down them. The mysterious hints like birds and fish, inherent within the abstract forms in her freely left blank space, stimulate viewers’ imagination. Her “Pictured Poetry,” which has been spontaneously painted on a canvas in awe of nature and life, is just like her microcosm.
