Born in 1965, Eunju KIM is an artist based in Busan, South Korea. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at major institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Busan Museum of Art, and POSCO Art Museum. She has also gained international recognition through solo exhibitions and participation in art fairs in cities including New York, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Milan. Unhesitatingly, she works on a piece of paper with only a pencil, which is a process of searching for the life energy that is wriggling deep inside the artist as well as a process of self-confirmation and faith to prove that she actually exists as she is.
Through repetitive, labor-intensive line work and layering, akin to a spiritual practice, Eunju KIM’s process embodies the life force and energy arising from the depths of her being. While the final works take the form of waves, vases, or flowers, these shapes are mere appearances. To the artist, what she draws is not the essential question. Instead, her practice seeks to transcend thought and self-awareness, reaching a state where she becomes one with the act of drawing itself. What began as a simple passion over 40 years ago has evolved into a profound journey of “drawing lines,” mirroring the essence of spiritual practice: to remain undisturbed by worldly forms and ideas, to dwell peacefully within one’s true self, and to experience the joy and clarity of life’s essence. This resonance is what gives Eunju KIM’s work its powerful impact on viewers.
