The work portrays the twin sisters Jilin and Jilin from Ai☆Madonna’s fictional family, the “Hanabenchi” household. Inspired by the artist’s close twin friends, the painting shows the two girls with their right and left legs bound tightly together by a single red ribbon. On the left, with a half-twin hairstyle, is the elder sister Jilin; on the right, with twin tails, is the younger sister Jilin.
Their hearts and bodies are deeply connected—they are one, yet also two distinct individuals. While twins may appear identical, subtle differences emerge. This coexistence of similarity and difference reflects the nature of family—the closest human bond—where deep connections exist alongside delicate tensions.
Within the “Hanabenchi” narrative, Ai☆Madonna focuses particularly on the relationship between mother and daughter. The work draws on her own experiences as a mother, her friendship with a Taiwanese twin-sister family, and her childhood fondness for “playing mother.” The red ribbon linking Jilin and Jilin symbolizes not only the emotional bond between mother and daughter, but also the ties and constraints that can come with it.
