Hakuta Yoshuya received his Doctorate in Fine Art and Design from the University of Tsukuba in 2012. His mastery of Asian gouache painting brings together traditional Japanese paper, natural rock pigments, water-based inks, silver foil, and tinsel, creating works of striking delicacy and visual richness.
In his recent creations, animals appear brimming with vitality, engaged in anthropomorphic cultural behaviors. Each figure is rendered with unique textures that symbolize peace, happiness, and prosperity, imbuing them with both dynamism and elegance while evoking a sense of poetry. Through these depictions, the artist conveys that all living beings hold their own meaning and value within the world. The animals are not portrayed merely as isolated entities, but rather as carriers of broader worldviews—each painting unfolding into a vivid, narrative scene.
As Hakuta notes, “When we encounter these works, many exchanges occur—understanding, reading, guessing… Yet, when it comes to animals, because of our differences in language, even with close observation and speculation, there remain mysteries we cannot fully grasp. That is precisely what makes them so fascinating and enchanting”.
His work has drawn the attention of collectors, art enthusiasts, and institutions both in Japan and abroad, with exhibitions spanning across Eurasia, including Germany, Singapore, and beyond.
