Living and working in Paris, Chinese sculptor Guo Chengdong (b.1975) explores the relationship between man and animal, reflecting on the idea of humanity‘s return to the essential, in an increasingly urbanized world. His recurring horse motif serves as a personal symbol, embodying spiritual reflection and societal transformation.
Horses are the central theme in Guo Chengdong’s creations. Their fluid lines and postures exhibit both strength and elegance, symbolizing the spirit of perseverance and the pursuit of ideals. This serves as a self-metaphor for the artist and reflects his exploration of his inner spiritual world. It also articulates the theme of "freedom and constraint," showcasing the transition from the physical to the ethereal, and from the material to the spiritual. Guo emphasizes the relationship between his works and the surrounding space, exploring the interaction between the architectural quality of the sculptures and their spatial structures. The horses in his works gradually evolve into architectural forms, becoming a medium for pure formal research and leading him into the realm of abstraction. The bronze material imparts a sense of weight to the pieces, while the surface treatment adds a softness.
