The Julius Baer Art Collection comprises a comprehensive selection of contemporary Swiss art that numbers over 5000 pieces, spanning a wide array of media. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, graphics, and drawings are displayed in Julius Baer’s meeting rooms, staff restaurants, offices, foyers, and corridors around the globe.

Established in 1981 by Hans J. Baer (1927-2011), the collection was inspired by his belief that art in the workplace offers a wonderful starting point for conversation. Today, the works continue to engage and intrigue both employees and visiting clients.

A Reunion: An Artistic Encounter at the Julius Baer VIP Lounge

Supporting the development of the arts has long been a cherished tradition at Julius Baer. We are honored to return as the Official Partner of ART TAIPEI for the third consecutive year. This collaboration not only underscores our enduring commitment to the promotion of art but also extends our dedication to communities across Taiwan and throughout Asia.

This year, the Julius Baer VIP Lounge will feature the special exhibition Beyond Colors and Shapes: HO KAN, presented in collaboration with CHINI Gallery. A pioneer of Chinese geometric abstraction, Ho Kan has, since the mid-20th century, pursued a unique artistic language by integrating the elemental structures of “dots, lines, and planes” as well as “squares, circles, and angles” with Eastern philosophy and Western abstraction. The works on view highlight not only his refined mastery of form and color but also his continued exploration of the intersections between Eastern and Western aesthetics.

Pioneer of Chinese Geometric Abstraction HO Kan “Beyond Colors and Shapes: HO KAN ”Exhibition Introduction

Centered on the “point” as a playful origin, his works carry a childlike vitality, while his gentle brushwork and hand-drawn lines preserve a warmth that makes his rigorous geometric forms vibrantly alive.

This exhibition brings together the works of Taiwanese abstract art pioneer Ho Kan from 2013 to 2024, showcasing his ongoing exploration of diverse approaches to geometric abstraction, and illustrating how the most basic elements can be combined to form rich spatial experiences and reflections on life. Visitors can sense the artist’s power to “simplify the complex” through the interplay of horizontal and vertical order, as well as the leaps and overlaps of color.

In recent years, Ho Kan’s works have become brighter and more expressive in color, while their structures continue to carry philosophical depth. At times, he uses calm forms to create serene spaces; at others, lines are diagonally cut and color blocks interlaced to convey dynamic energy. The striking lines in his compositions never disrupt the overall structure; instead, they achieve a subtle balance between symmetry and deconstruction. The geometry in Ho Kan’s work is no longer cold mathematics—it flows with vitality and playful imagery.
About the artist
HO Kan

Born in 1932 in Nanjing, he moved to Taiwan in 1949 and studied with Li Chun-Shan, later co-founding Ton Fan in 1956. He lived in Milan for five decades before returning to Taiwan in 2014.

Ho Kan is a pioneer of Chinese geometric abstraction and a founding member of Taiwan’s Ton Fan Group. Ho’s art evolved from Surrealist beginnings to a distinct geometric abstraction rooted in points, lines, planes, and color. Influenced by Western hard-edge abstraction yet deeply connected to Eastern geometric abstraction and seal carving, his minimalist yet lyrical style reflects a philosophy of reduction, rhythm, and harmony.

Major retrospectives include Reverberations ‧ Ho Kan at Taipei Fine Arts Museum (2016) and Villa Reale di Monza, Italy (2018). His works are held in major collections such as BAMPFA (US), Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (Rome), Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.
