Hakka in Words and Images: A Contemporary Assembly of Literature and Art|Hakka Affairs Council
“Hakka in Words and Images: A Contemporary Assembly of Literature and Art” takes as its conceptual core the bilingual pun on Hakka, bringing together both linguistic and visual dimensions.
The exhibition invites artists CHUNG Shun-Wen, CHENG Jen-pei, Musquiqui Chihying, in dialogue across time and generations with the late Hakka writer ZHAM Bing, foregrounding the interplay of “speaking” (hua, words) and “painting” (hua, images). Through this dual lens, it highlights the poetic narrative of Hakka culture while exploring cross-media experimentation, offering a contemporary reinterpretation of ethnic identity, collective action, and cultural memory.
This curatorial framework not only affirms the agency and vitality of the Hakka community, but also underscores the broader potential of Taiwan’s Hakka culture to enter into meaningful dialogue with the world, shaping visions of cultural exchange and shared futures.
